My sister called on a Sunday night to complain that her Samsung washer smelled like a basement, even though she ran Self Clean every month. She said it was like the way you describe a kid who does all the homework and still fails the test.

I have an LG, so I am not the family’s Samsung expert. I am, however, the person who will happily show up with gloves and a flashlight, so working out how to clean Samsung front load washer models properly became my Monday morning.

The short version for anyone in her shoes is that Self Clean helps a lot. It was just never designed to do everything.

What Samsung’s Self Clean actually does

A finger presses the Self Clean+ button on a Samsung washer.
Samsung also recommends Self Clean about once a month or every 30 to 40 loads

Before touching anything, I read what Samsung says the cycle is for. Its US page on how to clean your Samsung washer describes Self Clean as a cycle that helps prevent mold by cleaning the areas of the tub where moisture and detergent residue collect.

Self Clean, Self Clean+, and Pure Cycle are Samsung’s names for the same job: a maintenance cycle for an empty tub. None of them is meant for washing clothes, and Samsung warns that running one with laundry inside can damage the washer.

Notice the word tub. The cycle cleans the drum, but it never reaches under the rubber folds of the door seal, into the soap drawer, or down to the debris filter.

That is why a faithful Samsung washer Self Clean routine can still lose to the smell. Understanding that gap is half of learning how to clean Samsung front load washer machines properly.

How often Samsung says to run Self Clean

Samsung’s numbers are refreshingly specific. I wrote them on an envelope on my sister’s counter, because she had been running the cycle whenever she remembered, which is also my official schedule for flossing.

Task Samsung’s guidance for front loaders
Self Clean At least once a month
Reminder light Comes on after about 40 washes
Cycle length About 4 hours
Debris filter Monthly, or about every 40 washes
Detergent drawer About once a month

The reminder is a nudge, not an alarm, and Samsung only asks you to run the cycle at your earliest opportunity.

My sister asked whether monthly is really necessary, and honestly, how often to clean your washer depends as much on your load count as on the calendar. For her, knowing how to clean Samsung front load washer parts on a schedule beat panic cleaning after the smell showed up.

How to clean Samsung front load washer models with Self Clean

The cycle itself is the easy part. For a routine Samsung washer Self Clean, the company says no extra cleaner is usually needed, which surprised my sister, who had been tossing in a tablet every time.

Our old Whirlpool was different. Its Clean Washer with affresh cycle used a tablet, and I explained the process in my Whirlpool washer care guide.

  1. Empty the drum, including the sock stuck to the back wall.
  2. Close the door and leave the detergent drawer empty.
  3. Press Self Clean, Self Clean+ or Pure Cycle, depending on your model.
  4. Press Start and plan around roughly 4 hours on a front loader, which is longer than most people expect.
  5. Leave the door and drawer open afterward so everything can dry.

If you see suds or residue during the cycle, Samsung’s Malaysian support guide suggests running a second Self Clean right after. That usually points to detergent buildup, which is worth taking seriously.

When bleach belongs in a Samsung Self Clean

Knowing how to clean Samsung front load washer drums after mold has set in is a different job from routine care. Samsung’s mildew and mold troubleshooting steps for an existing smell or visible mold go like this:

  • Run a spin-only cycle first to remove standing water.
  • Pour liquid chlorine bleach into the detergent compartment, up to the max line.
  • Start Self Clean, Self Clean+ or Pure Cycle immediately, so the bleach does not sit.
  • Afterward, wipe residue with paper towels and run Rinse+Spin, repeating if needed.

Did you know? For this job, Samsung sends bleach to the detergent compartment, not the bleach compartment. My LG’s instructions point somewhere else, which is exactly why I never copy one brand’s recipe onto another machine.

I compared the different manufacturer instructions in my guide on how to clean a washing machine with bleach, including the amounts each brand allows.

The reminder light and Eco Drum Clean

Some Samsung models, mostly outside the US, call their version Eco Drum Clean or Eco Drum Clean+. Samsung’s guide to front loader cleaning functions says that the reminder appears once every 40 washes, and if you ignore it for 6 washes, it disappears until the next round.

Those models heat the water to roughly 140°F to 158°F, and Samsung warns against adding ordinary laundry detergent because chemical residue can damage the drum or later loads.

My sister had been dismissing her indicator for months, assuming it was a fault. The name on the button changes by region, but nothing about how to clean Samsung front load washer seals and filters changes with it, so check your manual before trusting a light you do not recognize.

How to clean Samsung front load washer gaskets by hand

This is where we found the actual smell. When I pulled back the bottom of her door seal, there was a gray paste of lint, hair, and softener, plus a bobby pin, sitting in a little moat of water. My sister stepped back and said, very quietly, that she washes the kids’ pajamas in there.

A sticky film like that can eventually shed black flakes onto clean laundry, even if the metal drum looks spotless.

Samsung’s guide to cleaning a Samsung washer keeps the method gentle:

  • Pull the gasket back carefully and work around the whole opening.
  • Wipe inside the folds with a soft cloth, using warm water and mild soap for buildup.
  • Dry the rubber completely before closing the door.

If dark residue remains deep in the rubber, my washer gasket fold guide explains how to check each crease without damage.

Samsung’s tips for keeping a washer odor-free add a weekly wipe of the door, gasket, and detergent area, and warn against abrasive pads. My sister now hangs a microfiber cloth on the dryer knob, and her kids know the seal gets a look before pajama night.

Cleaning the Samsung detergent drawer

If residue returns fast, check the MAX line and use only the detergent dose your load size needs

The drawer was her second surprise. From the front, it looked fine, but once it was out, the softener slot had a sticky, perfumed film that had clearly been building for years.

Samsung suggests cleaning the drawer about once a month. This is what we did:

  • pull the drawer out until it stops,
  • remove the inserts if your model allows it,
  • rinse everything in warm water,
  • and loosen residue with a soft brush,
  • let each piece dry completely before sliding it back.

Of everything I learned about how to clean Samsung front load washer drawers, the biggest fix was the amount going in. Samsung says too much detergent or softener can cause odors, and my sister poured softener the way some people pour wine at book club.

Cleaning the debris filter on Samsung front loaders

Most guides on how to clean Samsung front load washer models rush past this part. The debris filter sits behind a small panel near the bottom front, though top loaders and some older front loaders do not have a removable one.

  1. Wait about an hour after any hot cycle so the water can cool.
  2. Open the access panel and set out a shallow pan and towels.
  3. Drain the water through the small emergency hose into the pan.
  4. Twist the filter counterclockwise and pull it out.
  5. Brush away lint and debris, then twist it back clockwise until secure.

Hers produced a dime, a guitar pick and a tangle of thread. Her husband claims no knowledge of the guitar pick, and frankly, neither do the kids.

So is Samsung’s Self Clean enough?

For the tub, mostly yes. For the whole washer, no, and Samsung never claims otherwise.

What fixed my sister’s smell was the Samsung washer Self Clean cycle plus the parts it cannot reach: the gasket, the drawer, the filter, and an open door overnight. That combination is really how to clean Samsung front load washer models for good.

She now runs it on the first Saturday of each month, wipes the seal on Sundays, and has cut her softener in half. Check your model in Samsung’s guide to washer cycles and settings, and for other brands, start with my front load washer cleaning guide.
